Second Annual Lighting the Path
to Legal Education
The Second Annual Event was a success!
DHBA recognized the career of the Honorable Barefoot Sanders,
Federal District Judge for the United States District Court
of Texas, Northern District., who was awarded the 2007 DHBA
Lifetime Achievement Award for his contributions that led
to the desegregation of Texas Schools.
William Deckelman, General
Counsel of ACS, Inc. received the 2007 DHBA Corporate Counsel
Diversity Award and was recognized for his proven commitment
to increasing diversity within his corporate legal department
and for his efforts to support the professional advancement
of minority legal practitioners.
The Corporate Counsel Diversity
Award was established by DHBA for the purpose of recognizing
a corporate counsel who has shown through his or her leadership
a commitment to increasing and supporting diversity within
the legal profession. Specifically, the Award recognizes
a corporate counsel who has made the following efforts:
(1)
to recruit and maintain minority attorneys;
(2) to promote
minority attorneys;
(3) to ensure that outside counsel hire
and promote minority attorneys; and
(4) to directly hire
minority attorneys.
Last year, Tom Mars, General Counsel
of Wal-Mart Stores, Inc., received the Award.
Ophelia Camiña
was awarded the 2007 President’s
Award and was recognized for the successes that he has enjoyed
in her legal career. Ms. Camiña is originally from
San Antonio, Texas. She attended St. Mary’s College
of Notre Dame and University of Notre Dame Law School, where
she served as Editor of the Law Review. Ms. Camiña
is currently a Partner with Susman Godfrey.
The Event raised
over $65,0000 for the Dallas Hispanic Bar Association Scholarship
Foundation, which supports the Foundation’s

is already beginning to plan the 2008 Lighting the Path to
